Rules on the use of pyrotechnic articles

The Pyrotechnic Articles Act

According to the Pyrotechnic Articles Act, pyrotechnic products may not be set off within 250 metres, or at a greater safe distance so specified by the instructions for use, from:

a) the building of a facility providing inpatient health care in an elderly home, a home for persons with disabilities, a special regime home, a day care centre, a residential care centre, and a social service centre;

b) land on which an animal shelter, rescue station, rescue station, or zoo is operated; or

c) premises registered in the farm register according to the number of facilities intended for keeping registered animals as kept in accordance with the Agriculture Act.

The prohibition does not apply to Category F1 pyrotechnic articles.
 

City of Prague Ordinance

In addition to the above-mentioned Pyrotechnic Articles Act, the use of over-the-counter pyrotechnic articles on 31 December 2025 and 1 January 2026 is subject to the rules laid down by an ordinance of the City of Prague.

The ordinance is based on the history of negative experience with the use of pyrotechnic articles in sensitive parts of Prague, especially in the city centre, on the embankments, in parks and near hospitals and other facilities such as homes for the elderly. However, it does not apply to professional fireworks, which are subject to mandatory permits under the Pyrotechnic Articles Act, and to Category F1 pyrotechnic articles.
 

In the territory of the City of Prague, the use of pyrotechnic products beyond the scope specified by the Pyrotechnic Articles Act is prohibited:

a) at heritage sites in the City of Prague;

b) on watercourses, on islands in these watercourses, and on land adjacent to watercourse beds within 50 metres of the shore line;

c) on and within 50 metres of dams, dykes, water reservoir, weirs and impoundments;

d) in and within 50 metres of special protected areas;

e) in and within 50 metres of nature parks;

f) within 250 metres of facilities providing veterinary emergency services.
 

Prohibition to use “sky lanterns”

The use of products that use heated air or hot combustion gases for their uncontrolled flight, such as, in particular, product known as sky lanterns or Chinese lanterns, is prohibited in the entire territory of the City of Prague.
 

Violations

Compliance with the Pyrotechnic Articles Act and the Ordinance will be monitored by officers of the Prague Municipal Police and the Czech Police Force. Violations of the above-mentioned regulations are subject to administrative penalty proceedings, wherein a fine of up to CZK 100,000 may be imposed on natural persons. Officers may also impose on-the-spot fines of up to CZK 10,000.
