Celebrate Prague Zoo’s anniversary

26.9.2020 — The 28th of September is the Day of Czech Statehood. In Prague Zoo, this day is traditionally dedicated to the zoo's anniversary. The reopening of the Hippopotamus Pavilion and the introduction of the male hippoTchéco will be the highlights of this year's celebration. However, in order to maintain social distancing and prevent large numbers of visitors indoors, this part of the event will be broadcasted on ČT24 in the morning and visitors will be able to visit the Hippo Pavilion over the course of the afternoon.

Unique numbering system on Prague’s lampposts assists with rescues

21.1.2019 — There are more than 130,000 lampposts in Prague and each pole is marked with a unique number code. It accurately identifies a particular pole and provides information about its location. "We have a database of these numbers that is accessible to the Integrated Rescue system. Emergency line operators are able to quickly locate the caller when they give them the number of the nearest public lamppost. In practice, it helps a lot," Jan Chabr says. Chabr is Prague's City Hall Councillor and is in charge of Prague's municipal assets.

Prague Zoo to build new Arctic pavilion

22.10.2020 — Prague Zoo has been breeding polar bears since 1932, and they have had several significant breeding successes since then. However, taking care of them is very difficult and the 80-year-old pavilion is no longer suitable, so Prague Zoo is going to build a new Arctic pavilion.

31.3.2020 — Prague Zoo is closed to the public due to the pandemic, but life inside goes on through the zoo's new YouTube channel. According to director Miroslav Bobek, the zoo is functioning without any major issues. Roughly a third of employees are still working, taking care of the animals and basic operations, including curators, breeders, veterinarians, feeders and the maintenance crew. Construction work continues on sites such as the new gorilla pavilion.

Transport restrictions in Českobrodská Street

26.2.2019 — The current road works on a 300-metre-long stretch on Českobrodská Street will continue until the end of June and the necessary traffic restrictions are in place. The area under reconstruction runs through Běchovice. The traffic restrictions affect the stretch on Českobrodská Street from Do Říčan Street to Dolnopočernická Street. The work will be done in two stages - the first on the northern half of the road, and the second on the southern half. Access will only be granted to the emergency services, Prague City buses, residents, and suppliers. Other vehicles must have permission to access the area.

Exhibition on Screen: Introducing the young Picasso

27.3.2019 — On the 31st of March 2019, a project dedicated to the early works of Pablo Picasso will be screened in Lucerna cinema as part of the Exhibition on Screen series.

25.2.2020 — A brand-new film festival is coming to Prague. The first annual independent Indian film festival, 'INDIE-INDIA', will take place in the Pilotů Cinema on the 28th and 29th of February.

4.10.2020 — Visitors to the Ekocetrum Prales (meaning 'rainforest') in the Kbely district of Prague can admire an outdoor exhibition of selected photographs from this year's Czech Nature Photo competition until the end of October. 'Lesy hl. m. Prahy' (Prague City Forests) became one of the partners of the competition this year and the pictures have already been exhibited in the Wild Garden Hostivař.

First Matter of Art

29.8.2020 — Matter of Art ('Bienále Ve věci umění') with the subtitle Come Closer ('Pojď blíž') is a new event with the ambition of becoming a biennale - an event that takes place every second year. The full programme takes place in the Prague Municipal Library in Mariánské Square until the 15th of November, offering guided tours, workshops, and discussions. Proximity and empathy are the two central motifs of the Matter of Art 2020. One of the main locations is the Municipal Library's exquisite exhibition halls in Prague's Old Town.

Traffic restrictions on Vinohradská Avenue

8.3.2019 — On Saturday, the 9th of March 2019, the reconstruction of the tram line on Vinohradská Avenue will begin on the stretch from Škrétova Street to Sudoměřská Street. The expected completion date is the 12th of July 2019. Trams will not operate in the I. P. Pavlova - Muzeum - Flora section, and buses will provide alternative routes. Road traffic will only be maintained in the direction from the city centre from Legerova Street to Jiřího z Poděbrad Square. In the next part of Vinohradská Avenue, as well as in the direction to the city centre, the following diversions and alternative routes are proposed:

Rare Chacoan peccary offspring in Prague Zoo mean hope for world breeding

16.6.2019 — At the beginning of May, two rare Chacoan peccary piglets (called Wagner's peccary in Czech from their scientific name Catagonus wagner) were born in Prague Zoo. Now visitors can see them with their parents in outside enclosure at the top of the zoo. This is a great zoological event: the Chacoan peccary has existed since prehistoric times and was only known from archaeological evidence until the 1970s.
